My bonsai apprentice

Everyone has someone they look up to…

Everyone has someone who sparks their inspiration…

Everyone has someone who drives them forward…

For me, that someone is my daughter. Her work ethic is nothing short of extraordinary, her heart is vast and kind, and she has a remarkable ability to see the world through the eyes of others. In a world where such qualities are rare, she shines like a beacon.

I’ve been lucky enough to share so many moments with her—working side by side on projects, laughing together, driving around, catching a movie, or simply being in each other’s company. She’s spent countless hours with me, whether it’s working on trees, cleaning pots, sharpening tools, setting up displays, collecting suiseki, digging yamadori, pruning, or wiring. Through it all, she’s been there, offering her insight and showing incredible patience—not just for the hobby, but for me as her dad.

It’s hard not to get emotional when I think about what that means. I deeply cherish every single moment we’ve shared, especially as I grow older. The true beauty of it all is that it comes so naturally to her.

She might think that I’m the one teaching her, but the truth is, I’m the one learning. It is a true honor to be the apprentice of someone so extraordinary.
